Zugzwang

Short Film

This subtle film required creating a realistic grade and adjusting the images to show the passing of time and evolving relationship between the boy and grandfather from warm and inviting to cooler and more distant. Then, finally, as the boy is left conflicted in the final scene, there is a mix of warmth and cool light, as he struggles to resolve his love and dislike of his grandfather.

In addition to this grade, Smaller corrections were made to craft the raw image from the camera into a more dynamic image on a shot-by-shot basis. The haze and mix of natural and practical lights also required skin tone work and overall white-balance normalizing.
